Moi University Kenya: School of Public Health

Brief History: The School of Public Health (SPH) was established in October 1998 by the Moi University Council in recognition of the need for training high-level manpower in public health. The School's training programmes have been developed to meet Moi University's mission of producing skilled and practical health professionals who contribute to the realization of the country's national goals. The School thus seeks to provide high quality interdisciplinary training in public health for a range of health personnel, including policy makers, medical practitioners, academicians and researchers.

Purpose of the School: The School of Public Health is a postgraduate research-oriented training institution, which also offers professional public health services to the government, non-governmental agencies and communities. Whereas many countries in Africa, including Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Ghana have established institutes or schools of public health to address their manpower needs in the areas of public health, in Kenya, such training has largely been attainable in European and North American Universities at a very high cost. The Moi University's School of Public Health is currently the only purposely established institution in the country that offers opportunities for local training of public health professionals at postgraduate level, which is affordable, context specific and responsive to the country's needs

Mission and Vision: The mission of the School of Public Health is to promote improvements of health of the people of Kenya. The vision of the School is to become a regional and international centre for excellence in the training, research, practice and consultancy in public health.
