The Postgraduate Diploma in
Health Economics for Health Care Professionals aims to provide
you with the same basic tools as the Certificate but then
allows you to deepen your knowledge in a specialist area
and/or apply what you have learned to a work place problem
via a project. What is covered?
The modules are organised in a similar manner to the Certificate
programme, that is, each lasts for approximately 12 weeks
and comprises five or six individual study 'units'. Modules
are weighted at 20 'credits', where one credit equals
approximately 10 hours of study time.

We require a second class honours
degree, or qualifications and/or experience deemed by the
University to be of an equivalent standard. There is no
requirement for experience or qualifications in Economics. |

The MSc. in Health Economics
has been running since 1978 and the course has been completed
by over 300 British and overseas students. It provides
a comprehensive training in the theory and practice of
Health Economics and gives students the experience and
skills needed for research and health service decision-making.
Graduates work in government departments, research units,
universities, national health services and health care
organisations, and the pharmaceutical industry.
Students apply the principles of economic analysis in
all aspects of health and health care, studying the supply
of demand for health and health care, economic analysis
of health care systems and health care reforms, econometrics,
microeconomics, clinical decision analysis (selection).
The compulsory core elements are double
units in each of the following:
1. Health Economics
2. Evaluation of Health Care
3. Either Econometrics or Quantitative Analysis or Econometric
Methods for Research
4. Either Advanced Microeconomics or Applied Microeconomics
for Decision-Making and Policy Analysis
5. Clinical Decision Analysis (Single Unit)
Plus one unit chosen from: Applied Microeconometrics,
Cost-Benefit Analysis ,Development Project Appraisal,
Economics of European Integration, Experimental Economics,
Game Theory: Economic Applications, Health Care Management,
Industrial Economics, International Macroeconomics, Labour
Economics, Management Decision Analysis, Advanced Macroeconomics,
Political Economy from the General Equilibrium Point of
View, Public Finance
Public Sector Economics: Microeconomic Applications. |

This is a research-based
degree with multidisciplinary methods training to equip
you to design and conduct a substantial research project.
You will focus on the production, critical appraisal and
use of scientifically rigorous research evidence, applied
to a range of health-related areas.
You will take ten taught modules (all
ten credits). The modules are:
* Research Methods
* Applied Biostatistics
* Epidemiology
* Health Economics
* Randomised Controlled Trials
* Systematic Reviews
* Biostatistics in Research Practice
* Qualitative Methods
* Either Health Policy or Health Psychology
* Students select from a group including: Health Inequalities,
Measuring Health and Disease and Medical Sociology
It is also possible to study these modules flexibly on
an individual basis, dependent on your needs.
Research project: The research project
contributes 80 credits to your degree, and will be a substantial
piece of in-depth research. You will be matched with a
tutor with complementary research interests, and together
you will design an appropriate project, using the skills
and techniques taught in the modules. You have substantial
choice in your area of research, and for part-time students
in employment, the project can represent an area that
is of interest and value to your employer. |

This programme is particularly
relevant to science and social science graduates and health
care professionals who wish to develop their health-related
research and evaluation skills, and to people from any
health-related background interested in a career in health
services research. A number of our students on this pathway
have upgraded to MPhil / PhD study. |
| Requirements |
|
Applicants are required to
have a good first degree (>2:1) and motivation to work
in the general field of health care. Vocational health
professional's qualifications will be considered if accompanied
by a research protocol and/or certificates that illustrate
the applicant's academic aptitude. |

The MSc in Health Sciences
(International Health) is a new taught masters programme
focusing on the epidemiology and determinants of major
chronic and communicable diseases around the world. The
course will cover the health needs of people living in
resource poor settings, the epidemiology and biology of
pathogens, and the use of vaccines and other methods of
disease prevention. You will learn how to initiate and
conduct research and disease prevention measures in developing
country settings. It will be of interest to people currently
working, or aspiring to work, in public health or in developing
countries, and it has a more international focus than
our MSc in Health Sciences (Population Health) pathway.
Research training: Your taught modules
contribute 120 credits to your degree. You will take the
following compulsory modules (ten credits except where
indicated):
. Research Methods
. Applied Biostatistics
. Epidemiology
. International Health (20 credits)
You will then choose modules from the following list
(ten credits except where indicated) to make up a balance
of 120 taught credits:
. Biostatistics in Research Practice
. Cancer Epidemiology and Biology (20 credits)
. Global Public Health
. Health Economics
. Health Inequalities
. Measuring Health and Disease
. Medical Sociology
. Public Health and Ethics
It is also possible to study these modules flexibly on
