There is a huge discrepancy
between ‘high tech’ laboratories in western
countries and those available in resource poor settings.
The importance of laboratory parameters to diagnose and
treat diseases is undisputed, with a vast range of tests
and machines available for diagnosis. However, for the majority
of countries in the southern hemisphere the means and tools
for lab investigations are limited.
The course Appropriate Laboratory Technologies will impart
knowledge on what a laboratory looks like in resource poor
countries, which diseases are predominant, what means are
available for diagnosis and how to offer maximum service
at minimal cost and resources. Experts and facilitators
will provide deep insight into the field of appropriate
laboratory technologies.
The one-week training course Appropriate Laboratory Technologies
uses a mixture of theoretical
lectures, practical lab work and microscopy. It will provide
a broad overview on laboratories without electricity up
to the level of national reference laboratories where complex
analyses can be carried out.
At the end of the course, participants will be able to explain
needs and differences of sophisticated laboratories and
laboratories in resource poor settings. They will be prepared
for projects in developing countries, will have received
a comprehensive update on recent developments in the field
of diagnosis of infectious/tropical diseases, and get an
overview on issues such as safety, procurement and maintenance,
as well as waste management. |

Epidemiologische Trends brechen,
universellen Zugang zu evidenzbasierten Maßnahmen
sichern, ungerechten Kontext transformieren, neue Netzwerke
und Partnerschaften bilden, stets aktuell durch moderne
Medien.
