Objectives/
Content |
|
The volume and capacity of
activity undertaken by humanitarian and development agencies
has grown significantly over the past twenty years and,
with it, the difficulty agencies find in recruiting and
retaining field programme managers with the right skills.
The Masters degree for Humanitarian Programme Management
is the result of 3 years research carried out by Bioforce
with the cooperation of a number of aid organisations.
Training objectives
1- Enable participants to choose and apply appropriate
tools for managing themselves, other people, and organisations
involved in humanitarian and development programmes.
2- Enable participants to develop a comprehensive
understanding of the complexities of humanitarian programme
management and apply appropriate tools for managing humanitarian
and development programmes.
3- Provide participants with the practical
skills and confidence required to manage the financial
aspects of humanitarian programmes to maximise their efficiency,
effectiveness and accountability.
4- Provide an interdisciplinary forum
in which participants from a variety of professional backgrounds,
for example health, political and social sciences, engineering,
agriculture, development, international humanitarian law,
human rights, administration, and media, will critically
review and debate key issues of mutual interest.
The programme will investigate current approaches to
humanitarian programme management and identify and develop
models of good practice.
In addition, the programme offers participants an opportunity
to develop and undertake a research project in an area
of special interest indicated by client NGOs, IOs or National
Ministries. The research project will usually be located
overseas in collaboration with the client organisation. |

| Structure |
|
The modules can be taken over
one year or separately, according to participants’
availability, over a maximum of 4 years. |
| Methods |
|
This is a very intensive course
covering a lot of ground in a short period of time. There
will be great reliance on interactive methods and feedback
from the groups' collective experience.
While some trainers will come from inside the institutions
concerned, all of them have considerable experience in the
field. We will also be calling on recognised international
figures to share their expertise with the participants.
All participants will be individually tutored throughout
all modules; they will also choose a mentor for their research
project. |
| Evaluation |
|
The assessment systems used
will vary widely depending on the subject matter. There
will be few exams and much report-writing combined with
continuous assessment.
The diploma will be a Masters degree awarded by the University
of Liverpool. |
