The purpose of this course, which is mandatory for master’s students, is to provide participants with the basic knowledge and skills they need to carry out research in the field of international health, that is, on an international health problem, on health or health care in a low- or middle-income country, or on the health of a refugee population or other vulnerable group. Content includes research planning and funding, information seeking, philosophy of science, research ethics, research designs, and methods for collection and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data. Participants also focus on the specific study designs, data collection methods, and analysis techniques most relevant to their selected area of specialisation.
"Introduction to International Health Research" is a compulsory course within the Programme in International Health.

The course provides an overview of on-line resources in medicine and health, as well as practical experience in finding and using them. About half the course focuses on bibliographic resources, including indexes and public-access catalogues. Time is also spent learning about search engines and gateways and assembling a set of relevant www addresses. Participants carry out a series of exercises of growing complexity until they have mastered each resource.

Content

This is Uppsala University’s major course in the field of international health. It is a compulsory course for all students going through the Master’s Programme in International Health and also provides the necessary academic background for Swedish medical and nursing professionals planning to work abroad. There are usually around 100 Swedish and foreign applicants to this course every term. The course provides knowledge and skills relevant to health-care in low- and middle-income countries and in humanitarian assistance. The course has a strong public health orientation. Specific themes include basics of international health (burden of disease, poverty and health, primary health care, etc.); infectious diseases; nutrition; child health; reproductive health; and humanitarian assistance. Participants also develop basic skills in interpretation of bio statistical concepts, staff training and multidisciplinary teamwork.

Requirements A degree in medicine or nursing and proof of competence in English (TOEFL minimum score 550). Priority given to applicants with an impending assignment in a low-income country or ongoing training for a Master in International Health or Public Health. The course describes the problems of undernutrition and malnutrition in a global perspective with special focus on the life-cycle of malnutrition in women and children. It describes pragrammatic approaches to treatment and prevention of nutritional disorders, and research and evaluation strategies to evaluate programmes and develop new interventions and strategies to improve nutrition and health. It has been planned in collaboration with James P. Grant School of Public Health, BRAC University, Bangladesh and will include a 2-week period in Bangladesh with applied work in the field.

This course provides participants with the knowledge and skills they need to carry out an applied research project within International Health, with special emphasis on 1) evaluation of health programs and 2) community-based trials. The course departs both from an epidemiological, quantitative perspective as well as a qualitative approach to the research problems. Special emphasis is given to appropriate choice of methods and interface between quantitative perspective and qualitative approaches. The course includes research design, methods for collection and analysis of data, interpretation and communication of the findings. It departs from practical examples of previous and ongoing research at IMCH or elsewhere.

The Master’s Programme in International Health includes a minimum of 40 points (60 ECTS). Master’s students carry out a 20-point (30 ECTS) degree project after taking two compulsory and one or more elective courses: Compulsory: • International Health (10 points, 15 ECTS) • International Health Research Methods I (5 points, 7,5 ECTS) Elective: • Information Seeking (2 points, 3 ECTS)* • International Health Research Methods II (5 points, 7,5 ECTS)* • Health Programme Management in an International Perspective (5 points, 7,5 ECTS) • Public Health in Humanitarian Assistance (5 points, 7,5 ECTS)* • Women’s and Children’s Nutrition in Low-income Countries (5 points, 7,5 ECTS)* The compulsory courses are offered every autumn term. Students finish a master’s degree during one academic year by completing their courses during the autumn/spring, and their degree project during the spring. The Degree Project The Degree Project should address a topic in international health.

Profile
Applications can be accepted from physicians, nurses with advanced training, nutritionists or applicants with other educations relevant for international health, such as public health, dentistry, dietetics, pharmaceutics, social science and biomedicine.
Requirements

Applicants must have university education equivalent to a minimum of 120 Swedish points (180 ECTS). For students from most countries this corresponds to 3-5 years of university studies.

Course fee There is no tuition fee, but students must pay for their own travel and other expenses. Students who do not have guaranteed financial support for their travel to and from Sweden and their expenses during the programme (approximately 800 USD per month) cannot be accepted. Neither Uppsala University nor IMCH offer any scholarships.
