Health Technology: ICT for demographic and health surveillance
Healthcare areas: Prevention
Language English
Degree, Credits 10 ECTS-credits

In a world characterized by economic growth and increasing importance of noncommunicable diseases, infectious diseases still prevail, and are increasing in many resource-poor settings. Whereas some of these diseases are emerging or re-emerging, as a result of environmental change, antibiotic use, or increased mobility of populations, some prevail due to lack of resources or other factors. The purpose of the course is to provide basic understanding of the panorama, trends and underlying factors of infectious diseases and the potentials for their prevention in the tropical region. The aim is also to provide an insight in methods used for surveillance, research, and diagnosis of diseases common to the region.
Next Beginning Spring 2007
Appl. Deadline before October 15, 2006
Duration 3 weeks
Requirements B.Sc., B.A. from a recognized university
Methods The teaching includes not only lectures and seminars but also a strong component of laboratory work, where the students get hands-on experience of methods used to diagnose common infectious diseases in tropical countries. The course builds on student participation in discussions and seminars, as well as group case work, where the students are to analyse a selected problem area, with literature search and oral presentations at the end of the course, including their suggestions for preventive or control measures.
Course fee The actual teaching is free of charge, but the participants have to pay for all course books, other material, assurance etc. themselves.
