Theoretical and practical possibilities of applying different analytical models are discussed and practised. Design questions, programme monitoring, impact assessment, measuring efficiency and assessing the social effects are cornerstones in the course. Epidemiological and health economic concepts are used as important tools. The course aims at providing the participants with knowledge of evaluation concepts and ideas. The course covers an overview
of the basic concepts of epidemiology and their application
to a simple epidemiological study. There is a discussion
of the process leading from the formulation of problems
to analysis. Basic descriptive statistics and statistical
principles for epidemiological analysis are also discussed.
There is practical training in the use of computers and
suitable software for data management and analysis. Epidemiological
measurements, study designs and methods for analysing epidemiological
data are later dealt with more in detail. Various fields
of application of epidemiologic methods are presented and
discussed. This includes epidemiology of cardiovascular
diseases, cancer, reproductive health, outbreak and spread
of infections, and the role of epidemiology in health systems
research. Focus is on epidemiology in international health,
with examples from high, middle and low income countries
and the implications for the need of epidemiologic study
as well as for the methods used.
Expected
learning outcomes: After completion of the course the
student should be able to:
- understand and able to conduct epidemiological studies
- use computer for planning, data-management and analysis |

Public Health Informatics is an often neglected field in Public Health methodology studies, where focus traditionally has been on statistical methods and issues of study design. This course deals with organisation, validity and maintenance of data and data bases, with special focus on the needs of longitudinal studies. The course content is relevant to both research and routinely collected data in Public Health services in both high-income and low-income countries, with many examples from experience in the latter type of setting |

In a world characterized by economic growth and increasing importance of noncommunicable diseases, infectious diseases still prevail, and are increasing in many resource-poor settings. Whereas some of these diseases are emerging or re-emerging, as a result of environmental change, antibiotic use, or increased mobility of populations, some prevail due to lack of resources or other factors. The purpose of the course is to provide basic understanding of the panorama, trends and underlying factors of infectious diseases and the potentials for their prevention in the tropical region. The aim is also to provide an insight in methods used for surveillance, research, and diagnosis of diseases common to the region. |

The course builds on student participation in discussions and seminars, as well as group case work, where the students are to analyse a selected problem area, with literature search and oral presentations at the end of the course, including their suggestions for preventive or control measures. |
