Content |

The role of doctors and senior clinical service managers in management has become even more important within the ‘New NHS’. For clinicians becoming involved in management, an understanding of the nature of health policy and health services management will be
essential if their contributions to strategic initiatives, allocation and management of resources, re-integration of care and co-ordination of service provision are to be realised. Our Diploma in Management programme meets this need.
The course is both analytical (tracing links or causalities) and ‘interventionist’ (tracing opportunities for intervention to change or capitalise on particular links or causalities). No one theoretical perspective dominates the Programme; different courses reflect different perspectives brought to bear by a multi-disciplinary faculty. Principles of management are illustrated through case analysis.
The three compulsory modules are:
• Health Policy and Strategy
• Management of Human Resources
• Operations Management
Health Policy and Strategy examines the making of health policy and the patterns of implementation, illustrating principles of policy formulation and implementation through specific service areas.
Topics to be covered include:
• Contemporary policy development processes
• Health needs assessment
• Primary care
• Health inequalities
• Evidence-based care/Evidence-based policy and management
• Strategic management |

Developing good governance at national and corporate level is vital, and is the subject of considerable attention, regulation and review at country, sector and organisation level. Governance needs to be effective at all levels and this is especially true within healthcare; from policy makers/ministers through to front line clinical staff.
Governance reforms should be seen as a lengthy process of continuous improvement, which goes beyond introducing new systems and requires new skills, attitudes and organisational
cultures. The 2007 Keele Summer School reflects this, with an ethos characterised by dialogue and capacity building. Delegates will be able to explore the challenges they face in developing
and embedding governance within and across their organisations and the event will offer practical advice to assist participants in strengthening governance systems in their organisations and health systems.
Key themes:
- What is Good Governance? Exploring Governance at International, National and Local Level
- Governance for Development
- The Challenge of Poor Governance and Corruption
- Corporate Structures, Roles and Responsibilities
- Managing Risk
- Leadership and Behaviours for Good Governance
- Bringing It All Together: Building a Governance Framework
