The Stephen Lawrence Inquiry Report and Race Relations Amendment Act 2000 re-established the importance of the multicultural context of contemporary public service delivery on the political agenda. However, professionals and practitioners can be left with feelings of unease in the face of the challenges presented by cultural diversity. By drawing on the disciplines of philosophy and anthropology, the course seeks to exploit the full opportunities of these challenges by offering participants the context within which to develop skills of analysis and extended reflection. The MA Ethics and Cultural Diversity in Health offers the opportunity for current and past practitioners, primarily from both social work and health work, to discuss and develop common themes and values which relate to the ethical dimensions of their work in a multicultural context. The course employs a variety of learning and assessment techniques, these include: lectures, seminars, essays, presentations and dissertation work. |

This programme is designed to deliver a self-directed route to postgraduate study in the fields of Nutrition, Food and Health. The PGCert in Nutrition consists of core modules which develop the key ideas in modern nutrition and the application of these in the context of public health. The PG Diploma and MSc build on the nutrition modules to develop understanding of the importance of food and its impact on health. Optional modules enable the participant to select a route suited to their own interests whether clinical, public health or food safety orientated. The dissertation, supported by modules in IT, statistics and research methods, allows the participant to develop a research project within their own area of work. There are a variety of assessment methods including case studies, essays, presentations and examinations, enabling students to demonstrate their learning. |

This course is designed for those practitioners in health and related areas of care from the statutory, voluntary and private sectors holding a degree or professional qualification in a relevant subject or who can offer substantial relevant experience. These might include environmental health officers, nurses, health visitors, teachers, social workers, youth and community workers, primary health care workers and those working in private industry. Students without practice experience may be admitted, allowing a diversity of experience, including lay experience, to be incorporated. The course aims to provide the opportunity to explore critically and in-depth the skills, methodologies, ideologies, varied theoretical frameworks and research sources that contribute to our contemporary understanding of health, disease, health policy, health promotion, health education and health development. It is also aimed at providing a systematic introduction to a variety of mechanisms and channels within the community which can promote and establish multi-sectoral programmes for effective health promotion. |
