The Diploma in Health Service
Management (DHSM) is to develop specialised skills and knowledge
and to prepare learners for positions as managers at district
or provincial level, as managers of health care facilities,
or as health program co-ordinators, so contributing to the
need in our country for management skills at all levels
of the health care system.

at least four years duration in dentistry, medicine, nursing,
occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech and hearing

or sociology or other field of relevance to public health.
By special arrangement with the University. |
| Structure |
|
The course has two parts:
Part I: consists of core courses comprising 6 one-week blocks.
Part II: consists of advanced courses comprising 6 one-week
blocks.
Each course module has a reading pack and is followed by
an assignment. Evaluation is by a combination of course
work tasks/assignments and examination. |

The curriculum for the MPH
has been designed with the needs of the 21st century public
health manager in mind. This part-time degree provides
a solid base in the knowledge and skills expected of a
public health professional and prepares public health
practitioners for leadership positions.
Core disciplines in public health (health measurement,
primary health care, management in health and health services,
public health law, environmental and occupational health)
are offered. Areas of specialisation include Health Policy
and Management; Occupational Hygiene; Health Promotion,Hospital
Management and Rural Health. |

Content includes epidemiology, biostatistics and data management, information technologies for demography and health surveillance and leadership in research management plus a substantial field placement in an African Health and Demographic Surveillance site.
