Worldwide, two thirds of
the deaths in children under five years of age are caused
by infectious diseases, and the prevention and treatment
of infections in children is the number one priority for
global health. Reflecting this imperative, we recognize
that investment in research and intervention programmes
related to leading causes of childhood morbidity and mortality,
including acute respiratory infections, measles, infectious
diarrhoea, malaria, HIV, and TB is at an unprecedented
level.
The Postgraduate Diploma in Paediatric Infectious Diseases
is a part-time two-year programme covering:
• Classification of infective agents and basic
microbiological characteristics.
• Function of the specific and non-specific immune
systems.
• Pathogenesis of infection and infectious injury.
• Epidemiology of infectious diseases both nationally
and globally.
• Therapeutics in infection and immunodeficiency.
• Infection control.
• Immunizations.
• Diagnosis and management of the more common infections
in infants and children.

| Structure |
|
This course is divided into 10 units. Each unit covers a different aspect of statistics and statistical modelling. Individual units are built around practical exercises and realistic case studies that will enable students to apply statistical knowledge in a health context.
Weekly study for each unit is self-paced using online resources. Movement through the units is structured week by week to enable students to complete sections at the same time as the rest of their course group.
Individual activities can involve reading of related text book chapters and articles, working through problems or analysing example datasets. The group activities will mainly involve online discussions of important issues in statistics so that students can put the application of statistics into an everyday context. Discussions occur weekly, but are "asynchronous" due to possible local time differences between the student's locations. |

Objectives/
Content |
|
In recent years, the bringing together of evidence from randomised trials into systematic reviews has become increasingly common, not least because of the formation of the Cochrane Collaboration with its aim to prepare, maintain and promote the accessibility of reviews in all areas of health care. Systematic reviews are also of increasing importance when considering other study designs. In fact, they are becoming a vital part of not only the process of summarising existing research but also of the process of planning future research.
This course will take the participants through the process of doing a systematic review and will focus on the practicalities rather than the theory. It will consider the practical aspects of
- question formulation
- study identification
- appraisal of quality
- data extraction and collection
- statistical synthesis
- reporting
The course will take place on five separate full days. Each participant will be encouraged to identify a topic for a systematic review that they would like to discuss in detail during the course. |

The course aims to promote
advanced study of the challenges of global health and
their potential solutions by in-depth study of a range
of scientific disciplines, so that students may understand
and integrate medical, epidemiological, social and economic
aspects of ill-health in developing countries.
Our course offers students the opportunity to learn from
some of the world's leading figures in global health.
For example: Professor Harold Jaffe, previously Director
of the National Center for HIV, STD and TB prevention
at the CDC, is now Head of the Department of Public Health
and chair of the MSc Organising Committee.
The course will aim to develop students’:
- knowledge of the major global health problems and
their potential solutions
- knowledge and skills in techniques of analysis of
global health problems, particularly principles of epidemiology
and statistics, health policy and public health, and
international development with opportunities for training
in additional specialist fields
- capacity to critically appraise evidence in global
health
- skills and practical experience in researching specific
health problems
Academic
Content:
The four compulsory modules comprise:
* Challenges in Global Health
* Health Policy and Public Health
* Principles of Epidemiology
* Statistical Concepts for Global Health
Optional Modules: Students have to
decide early in the course (beginning of the first term)
which two optional modules they wish to study for during
the second term. The seven choices are as follows:
* Tropical Medicine
* Vaccinology
* Health Economics
