 |
Objectives/
Content |
|
The course provides a multidisciplinary analysis of processes of
change and development on global, national and local levels. A thematic
approach is applied, but various aspects are given a more in depth
regional coverage. Some regions are discussed more fully than others,
but through active participation of the group, comparative aspects
will be taken into account. For the sake of perspective, selected
examples from the development of Norway may be used.
The main objectives of the course are:
- To give a critical background to the discourse of development
- To provide an insight into development thinking and how it has been/can be translated into practice;
- To give an understanding of North/South interactions;
- To convey an understanding of the historical roots and the present forces that reproduce poverty;
- Through discussion of development aid, to assess the role aid can play in alleviating poverty, with particular emphasis on Norwegian aid policies;
- To examine socio-economic development, with special emphasis on the provision of basic human needs, social exclusion, regional inequalities and sustainability, and to examine the role of civil society and the state in development cooperation;
- To build new understanding of development issues from a dialog structured around some key issues.
