Objectives/
Content |
|
The purpose of the MPH is
to train public health professionals for a career in an
international setting. Graduates of IHD typically pursue
careers in international organizations as mid-level technicians
or senior managers of social sector programs in the developing
world. Graduates of the Department of International Health
and Development work around the world in a wide range
of agencies including: the World Bank, UNICEF, World Health
Organization (WHO), UNAIDs, Family Health International
(FHI), the Population Council, IPAS, Hellen Keller International,
Save the Children-UK, and CARE.
The technical skills developed for use in the international
context are largely applicable to work in domestic public
health programs as well, such as urban health initiatives,
state and local HIV/AIDS, public nutrition and family
planning programs.
By the end of the program, students will be able to:
- Identify target populations or subgroups that require
specific intervention approaches using demographic,
epidemiologic and economic analysis
- Design population, health, environmental and/or public
nutrition programs/projects in the context of national
and international policy
- Incorporate cultural factors in the design and management
of projects/programs
- Assess critically strategic obstacles to successful
social change in their sectors
- Evaluate development programs/projects in terms of
their quality, effectiveness and efficiency using qualitative
and quantitative research techniques
- Utilize effectively state-of-the-art information technologies
in the design and monitoring of programs/projects
- Access and utilize effectively the programming resources
of local, national and international organizations engaged
in social sector activities.

The doctoral program in International
Health and Development prepares the student for leadership
and applied technical positions in international settings.
The Department's philosophy stresses strong analytical skills
combined with a substantive knowledge base of international
development problems and strategic options for their solutions.
Doctoral level training of international health professionals,
based on Tulane's historical experience and projections
of future professional needs, targets the following career
tracks: Applied research and program evaluation; Program
management.
All doctoral students will be expected to demonstrate advanced
analytical skills. As a prerequisite to developing this
competence, doctoral students will successfully complete
the following courses: BIOS 604 (Intermediate Biostatistics),
an additional upper level biostatistics class, INHL 624
(Monitoring and Evaluation), EPID 712 (Epidemiologic Methods
II), INHL 645 (Survey Measurement), and the two international
health core courses or options: Health and Economic Development
and one of the survey courses in International Health.
As is the case with the Master's (MPH) program, students
may elect to specialize their training in areas such as
complex emergencies, food security/international nutrition,
mental health/medical anthropology, program evaluation/information
systems, and reproductive health/population. However, they
are responsible for developing quantitative, analytical
and computational skills necessary for research. In addition,
all students will demonstrate competence in a language other
than English. Competence will be evaluated by designated
faculty and/or staff. |

The MPH&TM program prepares
health professionals with clinical backgrounds to deal
with the important public health problems of tropical
developing countries. By combining a core public health
curriculum with course work on the epidemiology of tropical
diseases and the specific diseases prevalent in the tropics,
this program prepares physicians to understand the epidemiologic,
biologic and social aspects of tropical diseases; it also
prepares the participants to evaluate and plan disease
prevention and control programs.
The training program in Clinical Tropical Medicine and
Traveler's Health ("Diploma Course") is designed
to provide a comprehensive educational experience for
physicians and other health professionals seeking certification
in Tropical Medicine and Traveler's Health through the
American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTM&H).
The purpose of this program is to provide a structured
curriculum with practical instruction in tropical medicine,
including the pathophysiology, clinical features, diagnosis,
treatment, and control of diseases prevalent in the tropics.
The curriculum presented here has been approved as one
of six accredited Diploma Courses in Tropical Medicine
in the U.S. Most of the courses required for this program
are also required for students in the Master of Public
Health and Tropical Medicine Program (MPH&TM), many are
also taken concurrently by students in the Master of Science
in Public Health (MSPH) program. |

In the last decade, sexually
transmitted diseases (STDs), and human immunodeficiency
virus (HIV) in particular, have risen to the top of the
public health agenda. Almost 12 million cases of STDs occur
annually resulting in societal costs of more than $3.5 billion
annually (Healthy People 2000). STD research is particularly
complicated because of the sensitive nature of the topic
and the rapidly changing epidemiologic trends of the diseases.
The purpose of this track is to prepare health care professionals
who wish to pursue careers in infectious disease research
or evaluation, particularly focusing in on STDs or HIV.

Objectives/
Content |
|
- This is a 3 credit, 3 week field course to explore
a range of health, development and environmental issues
that interact in Sub-Saharan Africa.
- Kenya is a laboratory to investigate aid agency and
governmental projects tackling inter-related problems
of HIV and AIDS, poverty, poor health care, and endemic
malaria, urbanization, inter-tribal conflict, and globalization.
- Participants meet up in the densely populated, chaotic
city of Nairobi; a camping safari takes us to the semi-arid
northern districts and across the Rift Valley to the
Lake Victoria region, where we visit AIDS-affected Western
and Nyanza Provinces. Students spend time: talking to
VCT clinic staff, observing farming and water harvesting
in rural Machakos, attending a mobile health clinic
serving the Samburu, digging in a community garden and
assessing an AIDS orphan program.
- Presentations from local and international experts
complement site visits and community field trips. Academic
course work includes reading texts and course-pack articles,
individual essay writing, field exercises and group
discussions. Conditions are demanding, including long
stretches of travel on unpaved roads, rough camping,
hiking!
Course Objectives: By the end of the course, students
will be able to:
· Identify and describe major socio-demographic,
economic, historical, and environmental trends affecting
health and human development in AIDS-affected populations;
· Describe the HIV/AIDS situation (including regional
variations) in East Africa and relationships between HIV/AIDS,
other health concerns and human development in a range
of settings in Sub-Saharan Africa;
· List and explain major challenges facing local
health providers in light of HIV/AIDS;
· Identify, describe and assess relevant program
models used to combat HIV/AIDS;
· Identify, describe and critique projects and
programs to mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS at the individual,
household and community level in eastern Africa;
· Identify and describe project models and experiences
from our field visits to enhance your own project design,
evaluation, and proposal/grant writing;
· Discuss some of the ethical issues of research
and development in east Africa in the context of HIV/AIDS
;
