Weekend field trips are to Limon and the Caribbean coast, San Carlos and surrounding highland areas, and the barrios of San Jose'. Although some patients will be presented when available, the course is not intended to provide expertise in the clinical practice of tropical medicine, as such knowledge requires a much longer training period. Students do not participate in direct patient care.

The MPH program in Behavioral/Community Health Science (BCHS) prepares students for professional careers in which they will develop and deliver programs to improve and maintain health in our communities. Interventions to improve healthcare access and early detection of disease, to reduce or eliminate exposure to factors that increase risk of disease, and to educate the public and healthcare professionals are lead by behavioral scientists. Behavioral/community health programs are an integral component of most major public health programs.
Core courses in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Environmental Health Sciences, Health Services Administration and Management, Behavioral Health Science, and Ethics, as well as Fieldwork and Thesis/Capstone.

Program Descriptions: A 38-hour CEPH-accredited companion MPH curriculum is offered to duel-degree graduate and doctoral students on the LSUHSC campus and health professionals. It offers a choice of 3 tracks: (1) Public Health and Preventive Medicine (PHPM), (2) Administration and Management (A&M), and (3) the Generalist Track, a very popular combination of tracks (1) and (2), with electives selected from both tracks (1) and (2). Although the companion and health professional programs were initially designed to be completed by students and residents on a part-time basis over 3-4 years, full-time students, such as health professional graduates or even fellows on protected non-clinical academic or research time, may easily complete the entire curriculum in 3-6 semesters. |

Biostatistics is concerned with the development and application of statistical methodology to the study of living organisms. At the LSU Health Sciences Center, the focus is on applications of biostatistics to clinical research problems in medicine, dentistry, nursing, and allied health. Since the beginning of the 20th century, statistics has been an indispensable tool in research targeted toward the treatment and prevention of disease.
The MS in Biometry is a two-year degree that begins with a core of advanced biostatistical methods and statistical theory. Additional coursework in biostatistical methods includes categorical data analysis, survival analysis, multivariate statistics, and sampling. MS in Biometry students also receive training in research ethics, epidemiology, and the design and analysis of clinical trials. |
