Duration Full time - 1 year and 18 months part-time
Requirements Prior experience in relevant domains, (e.g. a degree in humanities, education and social work), recognised as credit bearing units in their formal study programme.
A degree in Health Promotion.
Evaluation Assessment will be formative and summative.
Course fee The tuition fee for medical course is in the range of R22 000 – R33 200 per anum, excluding books and meals. Students are expected to pay 25% of the total fee on registration. The rest of the tuition fee can be paid in three instalments i.e. 25% in March, 25% in April and 25% in May.
Scholarship Candidates who are in possession of a Senior Certificate or equivalent qualification may be admitted to a foundation or bridging programme with fulltime duration of one year.
Accommodation Unfortunately the University is not in a position to provide accommodation to visiting students. Faculty will assist in obtaining suitable accommodation.

To train relevant health professionals to assume leadership roles in the planning, delivery, management and evaluation of health services with particular emphasis on public health services.
In order to qualify for the MPH, the student must complete course-work of core and elective modules and a research thesis. Tuition in the modules is progressive over the 2 years period; introductory modules in the first year and advanced modules in the second.

The core modules are:

  • Health Measurements including Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Demograph
  • Health Policy and Management including Health Economics and Planning
  • Primary Health Care
  • Health Information System
  • Environmental and Occupational Health and
  • Disease Control including Communicable and Non-Communicable Disease Control

Elective modules are self-driven and chosen by the student in line with their interest and career intentions. These may be chosen in the following areas:

  • Health Education and Promotion
  • Maternal, Child and Women’s Health
  • Medical Sociology and Anthropology
  • Advanced Epidemiology
  • Advanced Demography

Duration Two years part-time degree.
Requirements Candidates must have a tertiary qualification, preferably in the health or social sciences with a minimum of 480 credits. This may include, but is not limited to, graduates of Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, Nursing, Health Promotion, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Dietetics and other graduates of natural or social sciences. Preference for admission will be given to applicants with clearly defined career goals that are consistent with the anticipated training outcome, a strong academic record and impressive references that state the potential for success as a public health professional.
Evaluation Both formative and summative assessment methods will be used. Each course-work module will be concluded by a formal examination. A minimum pass mark of 50% is required.
The research work will be assessed based exclusively on a presented thesis which will be externally examined. Oral defense of thesis may form part of the assessment.

Requirements
  • Minimum qualification for admission shall be matriculation exemption or equivalent.
  • Proof of registration with the South African Council as a general nurse and midwife or general nurse and psychiatric nurse, and as proof of registration with any South African Nursing Association.
  • Registration shall be maintained throughout the course.
  • Must have at least two (2) years experience as professional nurse.
  • Courses done in other universities may be credited on entry.
  • International students – a study permit must be produced on registration and proof of assessment of qualifications by the HSRC and SANC.
Methods Tutorials presentations in class group discussions teaching and management sessions in hospital under the supervision of lecturers.
Evaluation First Year
One(1) paper of 3 hours duration for each module. In addition, a comprehensive oral examination in Nursing Administration and Community Health Nursing.
Second Year
One(1) paper of 3 hours duration for each module. In addition, a comprehensive oral examination in Nursing Administration and Community Health Nursing.
Continuous evaluation through tests, assignments and group work contributes towards a semester mark.
Course fee

The tuition fee for these courses is R7 500 – R11 500 per annum, depending on the courses registered for – excluding books and meals.
Students are expected to pay 25% of R3360-00 on registration for each semester. The rest of the tuition fee for the first semester can be paid in three instalments i.e. 25% in March, 25% in April and 25% in May and for second semester in three instalments i.e. 25% in August, 25% in September and 25% in October.

Scholarship Limited bursaries are available on merit from the Public Service Commission of each province. Application forms are available from Health Districts throughout the country.
