This programme primarily aims at students wanting careers as recognised epidemiologists. The structure and programme contents are based on the requirements as arranged in the Netherlands for a Licensed Registrar of an A-class Epidemiologist. In Europe steps are being taken to formulate a set of competences and criteria for Epidemiologists. This endeavour bears a liking to the Dutch learning criteria. The intention is to become a part of a larger collaborative programme of European universities that will focus on the international exchange of epidemiology students. |

The course aims to inform you on all aspects of problem-based learning (PBL) as implemented at Maastricht, Nijmegen and Groningen Universities.
The Summer Course is not only about education, it is also about meeting other people. In this case people from all over the world. There are not many opportunities in life to collaboratively work for a number of days with such a broad mix of professionals and cultures.
Week 1 gives a broad general introduction to PBL. Week 2 offers Advanced Topics in PBL. In this week participants make their own selection from an array of courses on educational innovation in general and PBL in particular. Week 3 focuses on the 'Groningen Curriculum G 2010', the new medical curriculum at the Groningen University Medical Centre.

Participants will learn the basic principles of curriculum design and apply these to an interdisciplinary, thematic, undergraduate medical programme.
Participants will approach the design of an integrated curriculum in a stepwise fashion. Starting with the rationale for conceptual changes in health professions education and the characteristics of integrated vs. traditional curricula, the course will focus on the basic principles to be applied in designing an integrated, thematic curriculum. Subsequently, attention will be paid to the construction of phases of an integrated curriculum and the related opportunities and limitations. In the next step, the participants will use a variety of instructional formats, including student assessment, in constructing some educational modules. The last topics of the course are the design of the organisation and quality assurance of integrated curricula. |
