Objectives/
Content |
|
Primary health care increasingly takes place among a diverse and
heterogeneous patient population, with a wide range of belief systems
and health practices. In the community, patients now have a wide range
of social, cultural, religious, ethnic, regional, and educational
backgrounds, as well as different lifestyles and choice of self-treatment.
In many cases this has led to inequalities in health care, and problems
in communication between patients and health professionals
These include cross-cultural aspects of:
* Patients’ explanatory models of illness
* Body image and interpretation of symptoms
* Family structure and family health
* Pregnancy, childbirth, fertility and infertility
* Death, dying and bereavement
* Alcohol, tobacco, and drug abuse
* Use of non-medical health care
* Cross-cultural psychiatry
* Nutrition, malnutrition and dietary taboos
* Migration, refugees, stress and disease
* HIV/AIDS and other sexually-transmitted diseases
