China has the largest population
and the greatest number of women in the world, which,
along with China's ongoing economic and cultural metamorphosis,
creates enormous challenges in the provision of health-care
services for women. According to the WHO global survey
on maternal and perinatal health 2007–08 in Asia,
China had the highest number of deliveries, the highest
overall rates of caesarean section, and the highest rate
of caesarean section without indication. Women’s
health has become an issue of increasing prominence in
China.

Mass gatherings of people
challenge global-health security. Religious pilgrimage,
sports events, and mass movement and congregation of people
due to natural disasters or conflicts are the most common
cause of mass gatherings. Such mass gatherings have resulted
in global disease outbreaks, including polio, meningitis,
cholera, and the 1957 pandemic influenza.
Mass gathering medicine is complex, encompassing enormous
challenges in a number of areas: communicable disease
alert and response systems; water and sanitation management;
environmental health challenges; travel medicine; vaccination
strategies; implementation of international health regulations;
national and international security; emergency preparedness;
transportation; immigration; crowd management; border
control, and bioterrorism and other terrorism management.
