Content

The aim of this short course is to introduce key topics in international mental health, with a focus on developing policy driven research in developing countries. Students will be introduced to key themes and then encouraged to develop in groups their own research questions. These will be developed over the course of the week in facilitated workshop sessions into drafted research proposals. The course will focus upon the methods needed to ensure research is sensitive to cultural and health system factors. Beyond research methodology, the course will stress the need to make findings implemented in policy, and to consider the applications of intervention research.

The programme consists of three units: a compulsory Basic Mental Health Unit and two elective units. The Basic Unit provides an overview of: theoretical perspectives on mental illness; diagnosis and assessment; psychiatric disorders and treatment. You will be able to pursue your interests and to develop more in-depth knowledge and understanding of particular aspects of mental health and illness in the elective units, of which you will choose two. The teaching staff reflects the multidisciplinary ethos of the programme - they are drawn from psychiatry, nursing, psychotherapy and psychology - and most units have regular contributions from practising clinicians and visiting lecturers who are specialists in their fields.

Requirements Applicants should normally hold a relevant first degree with 2nd class honours (Full-time applicants will normally be required to have a 2:1 degree) or equivalent professional qualification and have at least one year's experience working in the mental health field. All applicants should provide two references, at least one of which must be an academic reference, before their application can be considered. Full-time applicants must provide two academic references.
