Content |
|
This course will:
1. develop (through wide reading, discussion, investigation and practice) the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and skills needed to plan, implement and evaluate health promotion initiatives
2. critically reflect on published research, analysis, policy and practice in relation to education and health promotion in low- and middle-income countries
3. improve the oral and written skills you need to critically review arguments and advance your own analysis supported by reflection on practice, research, or other forms of critical commentary
4. enable you to undertake, with support, a small research study on an aspect of education, international development and health promotion of personal and professional importance.
In this course you will benefit from:
- teaching by internationally renowned researchers of international education and international guest speakers
- interactive teaching methods that mirror good practice in participatory planning and practice for health promotion
- a diversity of students – students from more than 80 countries have been attracted to this course
- a study visit to Paris incorporating UNESCO, the International Institute for Educational Planning (IIEP)
- a choice of face-to-face and/or distance mode with a minimum of one term (January to April) in residence in London. Further Information

| Structure |
|
The face-to-face modules are offered over the ten-week terms in three-hour seminars once per week. Modules are offered at varying times during the day or in the evening. Some modules are offered as one-week intensive programmes of study. |
| Evaluation |
|
The course comprises four modules, each assessed by an end-of-module assignment, and a dissertation of 20,000 words or a report of 10,000 words plus one extra module. |

Content |

The programme is designed so that you can focus on education and health promotion in the context of low- and middle-income countries.
Modules A and Module B provide an access route to the MA Education, Health Promotion and International Development for people who do not have a first degree. If you gain a B grade or above for each module, you will be able to enrol for the MA course and take forward 30 credits.
You will receive:

# audio and video materials
# library and other learning resources and facilities, accessible online at a distance
# a personal academic adviser and tutor.
Required modules:
- Concepts and determinants of health and models of health promotion (Module B) (30 credits)
- Primary health care, education and development (Module A) (30 credits)

Profile |
|
This programme is for practitioners concerned with PHC and health education promotion in the context of international development. We pay special attention to the needs of health, education and social development workers in low- and middle-income countries. |
| Requirements |
|
You should be qualified as a health professional, teacher or community development worker in your own country. We usually require a minimum of one year’s relevant experience. |

| Structure |
|
Because the course is delivered entirely through distance learning, you do not have to leave your country. You can begin at any time of the year and will have up to 12 months to complete each module (or the report) from the time you register and receive the course materials. |
| Evaluation |
|
For Modules A and B, you will complete a portfolio of responses to the activities in the unit workbooks, along with a 4,000-word essay. For the fieldwork module, you will write a 5,000-word research report on a small field study based on a health promotion issue in your own area. |
