The Communications Systems
Master program offers prospective candidates a worldwide
unique education emphasizing the interplay of Mathematics,
Physics, Computer Science, and Electrical Engineering.
We offer specializations in the following technical disciplines:
Wireless Communication; Signals, Images and Interfaces;
Networking and Mobility; Internet Computing; Information
Security, as well as options for minors in management;
space technology; bio-computing; computer engineering.
We have an internationally diverse faculty composed by
world-renowned visionaries in their fields. Our research
programs cover almost all aspects of modern communications,
including theoretical foundations, security, signal processing,
vision, networking, computer engineering, and systems.
Most of our research is focused on building and demonstrating
technologies that will be required in next-generation
systems, and their integration into operational communication
systems.
Our extensive list of industrial contacts not only allow
for a fruitful interplay between our cutting edge research

In the current context of
globalization, most countries face major social, economic,
technological, political and institutional changes. In
order to successfully implement a project, be it a development
project, a public action or a private business, scientists,
technicians and academics from the North and South will
increasingly have to work together. The need to integrate
different kinds of expertise will also be a necessity.
In addition to the specialized skills in their respective
fields, professionals will have to be able to understand
specific historical and cultural backgrounds, to face
new and changing situations and environments, different
ways of thinking and implementing projects.
To help professionals to adapt to these situations and
promote an interdisciplinary and multicultural approach
to these problems, the EPFL is organizing a Certificate
of Advanced Studies in Management of Development Projects
(MaDePro).
The course is structured in three parts, all which are
compulsory:
Part I: Involves 19 weeks of e-Learning
covering such aspects as: International Environment, Sustainable
Development, Main Development Issues, Technology for Development,
Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Project Management.
Part 2 : Will last two weeks and will
be held in India, in and around Bangalore.
* Covers some introductory lectures, and in-depth field
trips giving participants the opportunity to experience
and study different development issues whilst confronting
the cultural, political and economic realities of the
field. * This second part is full time.
Part 3 : Consists of a personal project,
the subject to be proposed by the participant.

The future of biomedical
research lies at its frontiers with the basic sciences
and engineering. There is a growing need for the application
of quantitative approaches and front line technologies
to the life sciences.
Building upon the resounding success of the Human Genome
Project, the world of academic and industrial research
and development enters now a new era in the life sciences.
The detailed analysis of complex living systems has the
strong potential to lead to revolutionary discoveries
in biomedicine. But we are now at a stage where these
fundamental advances require the development of new tools
and approaches. These technological inventions need a
new way of thinking which includes ideas from a biology-trained
perspective as well as from an engineer-type of approach.
The aim of the Master programs at EPFL
is to train young scientists that are capable of approaching
research and development problems in concert with a profound
comprehension of the biological context as well as the
technology-creating aspect of an engineer. This goal is
reflected in the curriculum or our Master programs in
Life Sciences & Technology and their specializations.
This trans-disciplinary philosophy is also visible in
life science research carried out at EPFL.
Courses in biomedical image acquisition and processing,
Bioinformatics and Microsystems (30 ECTS), as well as
hands-on training in modern techniques and methods in
biological research (30 ECTS), and the final Master project
(30 ECTS credits). In addition, the student can choose
courses in one of the following branches (30 ECTS credits):
* Specialization in Neuroscience
* Specialization in Molecular medicine and oncology
* Specialization in Bioinformatics |

A Master from EPFL is a highly
regarded degree across the world. Anyone holding a Bachelor's
degree from a recognized university can apply to one of
the EPFL Masters Programmes. However, please be aware that
admission is competitive. Only candidates with excellent
academic records and references have good chances to be
accepted. Current EPFL students are automatically accepted
in the Master Programme of their field of study and receive
a re-registration form at the end of their bachelor studies.
Students with a different qualification need to submit
an application file.
Students from other Swiss universities or from universities
which are members of the CLUSTER network are automatically
accepted in the Master programme of the same discipline
as their Bachelor's degree. These candidates also need
to go through the application process. Remaining positions
are limited and acceptance is competitive. |
