Information and information
systems are complex multi-disciplinary activities that
are increasingly in demand for the support and development
of clinical and health services management. The quality
of health service information profoundly influences the
quality of health care itself. Therefore, for the systematic
processing of information in health care, health care
professionals require a rigorous, relevant and up-to-date
training in health informatics, basic epidemiology, statistical
methods and the principles of ethics and data protection.
The course will provide postgraduate tuition in the special
skills needed to determine the information needs of health
service management, the collection of relevant data and
conversion of those data to usable and useful information
necessary for competent management. Particular attention
will be paid to operational information systems and to
manual and computerised systems as well as to systems
dealing with utilisation of health services. Health-related
systems will be included with a view to providing an information
framework on which effective intra- sectoral and inter-sectoral
coordination can be built. An important element mnning
throughout the course is the production and use of information
for evaluating and monitoring health services in terms
of efficacy, efficiency and cost-effectiveness. This element
permeates all the modules and forms an important part
of the tuition and project work.
Modules: Health Service organisation; Planning and Management
Systems and their information needs; Staff and Departmental
Management; Project and Programme Management; Data collection
methodology; Information and communication technology;
Operational Information Systems; Information production
and presentation; Data analysis; Problem identification:
problem-solving; Evaluation and monitoring; Clinical and
Medical Audit; Service Audit; Quality management; Standard
setting: assessing performance; Hospital service management
information systems; Community services management information
systems; Health and health-related information systems;
Service Planning, Management and Evaluation. |
