The Master of HIV is the

and organisational management of HIV. The master's degree
programme in HIV sets out to provide students with the
state-of-the-art public health and clinical HIV knowlegde,
skills and competences that will allow them to engange
on the labour market with expertise that rests on a scientific
foundation.
The objective is that the student upon
graduation will be able to:
a) contribute on a scientific background and at an academic
level to the improvement in treatment and care of PLHIV
b) participate in the planning, execution and evaluation
of preventive and sustainable measures based on accepted
policies and standards
c) analyse HIV-related issues including the individual,
social, cultural and political context
d) participate in quantitative and qualitative HIV research.
The Masters focus is on HIV in an international perspective,
however, because of the complex interplay between HIV,
other diseases and their management teaching is generic
and cross-disciplinary. The one-year flexible programme
includes courses in: Epidemiology, HIV Prevention, Treatment
and Care; Health systems & HIV; Virology & immunology;
Sexual & Reproductive Health; Policy & Organisational
Management etc. Students choose between 2 lines of specialisation:
The Biomedical line or The Policy and Organisational Management
line. The Masters is a one-year full-time education, which
alternatively can be taken module wise as part-time study.
Diploma short courses are also available - an excellent
alternative for those short of time. |

This course aims at providing
participants with an in-depth theoretical and practical
insight into how national HIV and AIDS programmes can
be developed, integrated and maintained in a local, national
and global perspective.
On completion of the course, participants should be able
to:
* Critically appraise existing international and national
HIV policies and strategies utilising appropriate modes
of research and analysis (f. inst. epidemiological, socio-economic,
etc.);
* Critically analyse and discuss barriers to testing,
counselling, prevention and treatment at international,
national, and community level in a systems perspective;
* Apply relevant theories and concepts to formulate an
HIV/AIDS programme targeting a specific population group
as part of an existing national response in a given country;
* Design and develop appropriate management strategies
for HIV/AIDS programmes, including planning, coordination,
monitoring and evaluation, in national and local contexts.
Content: With improved access to ARV
therapy in low- and middle income countries the response
to the HIV pandemic has changed towards a more bio-medical
approach. Whereas the international community has focused
much on improving access to ARV therapy for people in
need, often through vertical programmes, there is an increasing
need to strengthen the capacity of professionals to translate
protocols and guidelines into workable programmes for
local health care systems and with a renewed focus on
prevention.
The course content reflects local, national as well a
global perspectives and is structured around the following
themes:
* Programmatic responses to HIV
* Expanded access to ARV treatment programmes
* Involvement of civil society, such as NGOs, faith-based
organisations and HIV-positive networks.

In this intensive three week
course, students will explore the epidemiology and social
origins of mental health disease in low income settings.
Additionally, students will learn to think critically about
designing interventions and scaling up services to affected
populations within the confines of a low-income health setting.
Mental disorders are an important cause of long-term disability
worldwide and the WHO attributes 31.7% of all years lived
with disability due to neuropsychiatric diseases. These
disorders are estimated to cause 1.4 million deaths each
year and are quickly becoming a dominant cause of ill health
worldwide. Partly inspired by the 2007 Lancet Series entitled
Global Mental Health; this course explores the topic of
mental health disease in low-income countries from a multi-disciplinary
perspective.
The course is divided into three one-week thematic areas:
- The Epidemiology of Mental Health Disease
- Society and Mental Health Disorders
- Treating and Preventing Mental Health in LMIC

"We cannot afford to
say, ‘we must tackle other diseases first - HIV/AIDS,
malaria, tuberculosis - then we will deal with chronic
diseases'. If we wait even 10 years we will find that
the problem is even larger and more expensive to address."
Dr. Olusegun Obasanjo, President of the Federal Republic
of Nigeria.
The University of Copenhagen is offering an intensive
course on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) to professionals
working in or aiming at a career in the field. The course
covers the main aspects of NCD prevention and control
with special focus on global and national strategies.
Upon completion of the course, participants will have
strengthened their capacity to become better planners,
managers, trainers and implementers of NCD programmes
and integrated NCD care and prevention activities.
Content: The course will explore the
evidence and the frameworks used to address the burden
of non-communicable diseases through action on the conventional
risk factors (lifestyle factors such as tobacco use, unhealthy
diet, physical inactivity, and high blood pressure etc)
but also more 'upstream factors' and the social determinants
of health (e.g. urbanization, income, education, trade,
health transitions).
This course aims also at providing participants with
an in-depth theoretical and practical insight into how
national NCD programmes can be developed, integrated and
maintained in a local, national and global perspective.

Introduction to
the course: A challenge in the field of sexual
and reproductive health and rights is how to integrate
it with work on HIV/AIDS. As sexual transmission is the
leading mode of HIV transmission, this begs the question
of how these two fields interact, in particular where
reproductive health services primarily address women.
Earlier in the epidemic many more men were reported to
be HIV positive than women. As this picture changes, in
sub-Saharan Africa in particular, women also become a
“risk group” and marriage is no longer the
“safe haven” it was purported to be. This
impacts on prevention messaging and interventions, be
they from policy-makers, nongovernmental service providers
or health care professionals. Another challenge is whether
the current strong funding efforts into HIV/AIDS can be
expected to also strengthen health systems to help reach
MDG 5, i.e. maternal mortality reduction. |

This unique course
is the first of its kind for life sciences professionals
in Denmark. Modern light microscopes are available
in numerous different configurations that incorporate
very different capabilities for examining biological specimens,
yet life scientists often have little knowledge of their
potentials, and even less experience of their limitations
for collecting and visualising scientific data. This course
has been designed to combine an appreciation of the possibilities
of the various methods with an understanding of their
limitations, within a condensed time-frame. The course,
taught by practicing microscopists of international standing,
who each have twenty five years, or more, of experience
of using the techniques (providing that the techniques
themselves are that old) is organised in collaboration
with the Royal Microscopical Society. It is largely presented
in the new state-of-the-art Core Facility for Integrated
Microscopy at the University of Copenhagen; a centre whose
design and instrumentation sets standards of excellence
in microscopy. |

The commercial and scientific
prominence of biopharmaceuticals is beyond dispute. This
course provides an interdisciplinary introduction to the
new advances in our ability to develop macromolecules
into effective biopharmaceuticals. At first sight, development
of biopharmaceuticals appears straightforward since the
biology of endogenous compounds, such as proteins or peptides,
and clinical proof of concept and safety profile often
are given beforehand (e.g. insulin, growth hormone, coagulation
factors). However, given by tremendous recent advances
in genetic understanding, biotechnology and knowledge
of protein function in the biology of diseases, an explosion
of novel opportunities for development of biopharmaceuticals
has occurred. Even though discovery of novel biopharmaceuticals
may be void of typical small molecule pitfalls, the complexity
of pharmaceutical development and safety assessment phases
may still pose large challenges, in the overall development
of novel biopharmaceuticals. |

What is the best
and most effective response to major infectious diseases
such as HIV, Tuberculosis and Malaria? In this
course, leading experts will critically evaluate the impact
and consequences of how social, public health and health
systems address this challenge best. We will discuss the
central components of a comprehensive response to address
these diseases. We know that these diseases affect hundreds
of millions of people around the world killing millions
every year. These diseases typically affect younger populations
and lead to major social and economic consequences, in
particular in low-income countries. Africa and Asia are
the worst affected regions, but the burden is also significant
in wealthy countries, not least due to the high costs
of treatment for HIV and multidrug-resistant tuberculosis
coupled with their financial commitment to help resource-poor
countries. The course presents applied strategies for
control of these major global infectious diseases. The
approach will centre on the public health implications
of how these diseases are managed - or mismanaged - around
the world, including funding and other needs to provide
testing, treatment and care. Medical aspects of prevention
and treatment will throughout the course supplement public
health considerations. |

What price will we
pay to prolong a life by a month? Can we afford to give
all patients access to new expensive drugs? Who sets the

level in the pathophysiological, preclinical and clinical
aspects of the metabolic syndrome combined with hands-on
training in the methodology of quantifying the components
of the syndrome, where participants will practise on each
other and determine their metabolic profiles. The metabolic
syndrome is a cluster of cardiovascular risk manifestations
of overnutrition and sedentary lifestyle, encompassing
insulin resistance, glucose and lipid metabolism disturbances,
hypertension, vascular, endothelial and coagulation dysfunction
and microalbuminuria. The syndrome develops epidemically
worldwide and is a major component in Type 2 diabetes
and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. |
