Content
An intensive 5-day course examining the most important problems and priorities in disaster situations as they specifically relate to children and families. Course combines a solid mix of didactic lectures, problem-based learning exercises, skills training and practice.
After attending this program, participants will be able to:
• Develop critical thinking and problem solving skills through problem-based
learning exercises.
• Identify organizations most frequently involved in providing assistance in
disasters and define their roles and strengths.
• Rapidly assess epidemiologic issues and prioritize relief efforts.
• Recognize malnutrition and its consequences and plan interventions.
• Define important sexual health issues and recognize the impact of gender-based
violence in disaster settings.
• Define developmental variations of stress reactions in children and ageappropriate
interventions.
• List basic points of international humanitarian law as they apply to women and
children.
• Describe personal preparation, cross-cultural communication tools and
security precautions for workers.
• Describe common ethical issues encountered in disaster situations.
• List principles of triage in children.

Controlling Anger, Avoidng Outbursts, Handling Stress Effectively, Communicating Appropriately

The display of strong emotion and especially anger is a frequent challenge to a health care healing and working environment. Half of nurses surveyed reported knowing colleagues who had left a previous position due to anger events between doctors and nurses. Medical malpractice companies report increased rates of malpractice actions as a consequence of physicians demonstrating anger to patients or families. State Medical Societies report that non-substance abuse physician disruptive behaviors result in 1/3 of all complaints received about doctors. Working in the current health care system can produce increased levels of frustration, stress and angry outbursts.
