Minimum requirements necessary
for application to Residential Master's Programs:
* An undergraduate degree with a Grade Point Average (GPA)
of 3.0 or higher (4.0 grading scale)
* GRE or GMAT scores in the top 50th percentile are required.
Scores must not be more than five years old. Students applying
to the MPH program who have obtained a doctoral degree from
a U.S. or Canadian university are exempted from the GRE/GMAT
requirement. Relevant work experience is considered in the
admissions process.
* Applicants are advised to prepare in microeconomics, accounting
and statistics.
* International applicants are required to submit a Financial
Certificate.
* Applicants to the MPH Program are required to have a doctoral
degree or be enrolled in a doctoral program (most commonly
dentistry, law, and medicine). |

a specific time. In addition, most distance courses will
take approximately 10-12 hours per week for successful completion
of the course. Distance education courses consists of a
mix of readings, group assignments through a discussion
forum, individual assignments and audio/visual tutorials.
The most common presentation of course materials is via
narrated slide presentations using Breeze Macromedia. |

The program provides community leaders in public health, health services, emergency management, emergency medical services, fire, law enforcement and other disaster responders with the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of management systems used to prepare for, and to respond to, natural and man-made disasters, including terrorism.
The four core courses are:
- Community and Public Health Security: Designed to teach students about local, state and federal systems, including FEMA, CDC and state emergency management systems.
- Community and Public Health Disasters: Focuses on the science and agents of hazards, such as biological, chemical, weather and radiological hazards.
- Analytic Methods: Designed to teach students the methods of assessing, designing and evaluating disaster management systems, including forensic epidemiology, risk assessment, and cost/benefit analysis
- Disaster Management Issues: Designed to expose students to current issues in disaster management, including evacuation, recovery, mitigation and crisis communications.
- CEM Certification: Structured approach to obtaining credential as a Certified Emergency Manager (CEM)® through the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM).
The elective choices are:

The practice-based curriculum in the Leadership MPH is interdisciplinary and addresses the core workforce competencies in public health while placing special emphasis on leadership. The Public Health Leadership Program offers a unique opportunity for working public health professionals to earn a 42-credit Master of Public Health (MPH) degree through online courses. |
| Requirements |
|
- 3 years experience in health or a health-related profession
- 3 letters of reference
- GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (junior/senior years) recommended
- Current GRE or GMAT equivalent (top 50th percentile recommended)
- (GRE may be waived for individuals with a doctoral degree obtained in the U.S.)

- The distance program is designed to be completed over a period of three years.
- All classwork is completed online with the exception of two 1-week sessions which are held in Chapel Hill--one in August of the first year and one the following May.

Students usually take two courses each semester, fall and spring. Some students elect to take classes during summer.
- Graduation requires a minimum of 42 credits.Students who are enrolled in or who have graduated from the Certificate in Core Public Health Concepts Program are allowed to transfer up to 17 credit hours, pending approval by the program, obtained in the Certificate Program towards a Master's degree in Public Health.
