Content

The curriculum includes:

  • the struggle for health: achievements, strategies and new directions;
  • working with communities and with grass roots health organizations;
  • comprehensive primary health care: achievements, lessons and new directions;
  • the political economy of health: globalization, the WTO, the IMFand the WB; local issues and global pressures;
  • the right to health: principles, achievements and new directions;
  • people’s health and the environmental struggle;
  • research: part of the problem and part of the solution;
  • social determinants of health (poverty, oppression and hierarchy; alienation and exclusion; racism and sexism; materialism) and the struggle for health.

Participants should come prepared:
* to describe in some detail an activist project or campaign or movement that they have been directly involved in; to describe in sufficient detail for the strategies, theories and skills of practice to be evident;
* to provide an overall assessment of the health challenges in their country and the status and prospects for PHM;
* to present an account of an episode of teaching and or learning that they have been involved in.

The program for all of the IPHU Short Courses is based on the People’s Charter for Health (PCH). We will explore the meaning of the PCH; analyse the challenges it presents and develop resources and strategies for the struggle for Health For All. Participants should ensure that they are very familar with the Charter.

Profile
The IPHU short courses are to enable younger health activists to make new connections, share experiences and study together. They aim at strengthening the global network of people’s health activists.
Requirements

Applicants should have a university degree.

Methods The course will involve: pre-reading; lectures, small group discussions, debates, workshops and follow up study. Resource materials will take the form of hard copy readings, lecture notes and
websites. In addition, the course will provide a unique exposure for all participants through engaging the course with a planned Regional Health Forum that will be held on the last 2 days of the course.
Cooperation IPHU and the PHM Regional Coordination Group for the Middle East and North Africa, in collaboration with the Association for Health and Environmental Development (AHED) invite applicants for the next IPHU short course for health activists.
Course fee Registration fees: For Egyptians: EGP 350; For Non-Egyptians US$ 100

Accommodation: For Egyptians: EGP 1500, For Non-Egyptians: US$ 600
Scholarship A limited number of scholarships are available. They may cover the travel costs and/or accommodation. Applicants should seek such support from sponsors in their own countries in the first instance.

Profile
IPHU short course participants who are enrolled in an MPH and request accreditation of their training as part of their MPH will be required to submit assignments for assessment and will be provided with formal certification regarding the standard of the program and of their achievement.
Course fee Enrolment and tuition fee: $US 150 (Indian Rupees 6000).
Accommodation and meals: $US 150 (Indian Rupees 6000).
Traveling expenses have to be borne by participants or their organisations.
Scholarship Some full and partial scholarships covering travel and/or accommodation, meals and tuition may be available. (Applicants should seek such support from sponsors in their own countries in the first instance.) Applicants for scholarships should secure the endorsement of: at least one person engaged in the PHM organisation at regional or global levels; an organisation with which they have been working.
