Public Health has been defined
and understood in a number of ways from a range of perspectives.
More recent definitions emphasise a wide interdisciplinary
context. An accepted definition of public health is 'the
science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life,
promoting, protecting and improving health and well-being
through organised efforts of society.' These efforts will
address policy issues at the level of the population's
health and will tackle the roots of health and disease,
as well as considering the provision of effective health
care services. Public health works through collaborative
working that cuts across disciplinary, professional and
organisation boundaries, and exploits this diversity in
collaboration, to bring evidence and research-based policies
to all areas which impact on health and wellbeing of populations.
Core modules:
- Understanding Public Health
- Public Policy
- Evidence-Based Public Health
- Epidemiology and Research Methodology
- Research Project Skills
- Dissertation
- Health Promotion Theory and Practice
- Communicable Disease Control
Optional modules:
- Social Marketing
- Applied Epidemiology
- Health Economics
- Healthy and Sustainable Communities
- Understanding Statistics
- Regeneration, Renewal and Practice
