Content

This program prepares health professionals from a broad range of backgrounds, with knowledge and skills from a variety of disciplines, to define, critically assess and resolve public health and nutrition problems. Various fields of study allow students to focus on Australian public health issues, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, and on international public health, including Community Nutrition and Tropical Health in the Asia Pacific region. The masters program culminates with either a standard coursework component or dissertation/fieldwork project. The dissertation/fieldwork project provides an opportunity for students to apply their newly acquired knowledge and skills in a public health/nutrition setting. Students in the standard stream can carry out their dissertation projects within Australia or overseas while Community Nutrition and Tropical Health students carry out fieldwork with collaborating institutions in Southeast Asia or the Pacific. Graduates have the skills to assess the social, behavioural, cultural, political, economic and institutional context of health problems in the general population and in specific groups; understand health care organisation and delivery and work effectively within these systems; apply epidemiological and biostatistical methods and principles to gather, analyse and evaluate data and published literature; demonstrate a working knowledge of diseases/health problems of major public health importance; work with communities, governments and non-government agencies in the planning, delivery and evaluation of small public health programs; and design and implement small research projects.
