Evidence-Based Healthcare
is the application of the best evidence available to make
the most appropriate clinical decisions for patients.
Health Technology Assessment (HTA) can be defined as the
evaluation of a technology (drugs, medical devices and
clinical procedures) through synthesis and systematic
review of the scientific evidence. It is concerned with
costs and effects of technologies in their widest sense,
and use of the information for policy and decision-making.
Over the past 20 years, many countries have implemented
a formal policy for supporting and promoting HTA. Several
national HTA agencies have been created and are playing
an increasingly important role in international and national
decision-making. There is an urgent need for experts trained
in the production, appraisal and use of HTA reports.
The MSc in EBH and HTA has been established specifically
to meet this need and was developed from the highly successful
systematic review training course run by the West Midlands
Health Technology Assessment Collaboration at the University
of Birmingham. It provides both a firm grounding in the
knowledge and range of skills and disciplines which are
essential to HTA. Topics covered including study design,
epidemiology and statistics, economic evaluation, systematic
reviews and public health policy and it provides hands
on experience of HTA production.
Benefits of doing this course:
• HTA is a new and rapidly developing area.
• There is a global shortage of people with the
skills and training to effectively undertake health technology
assessments. Therefore employment prospects after graduation
are excellent.
• This is the only course in the UK to provide such
specialist training and one of only a handful of such
courses globally.
• EBH is rapidly gaining ground within medicine
as a major force for change. |
