The MPH program is competency-based and focuses on a paradigm that emphasizes the determinants of health and disease, intervention and advocacy, as well as critical and analytic thinking. The importance of a community approach to health pervades the program.
Students gain competency through learning experiences in the disciplines of public health and in their chosen areas of concentration: epidemiology and biostatistics, health behavior and education, or health management and policy.
The MPH curriculum includes three principal elements:
A. Core
Core courses emphasize critical public health competencies. The specific core competency areas include: biostatistics, epidemiology, social and behavioral sciences, environmental health, health management and policy, research design and communication.
B. Concentration
Concentration courses provide students with an opportunity to specialize in a chosen discipline of public health. Areas of concentration include:
• Epidemiology and biostatistics (EPBS)
• Health Behavior and Education (HBE)
• Health Management and Policy (HMP)
C. Public Health Experience
During their course of study, students will be given the opportunity to practice the knowledge and skills acquired from their coursework through a research project and a practicum. Students will synthesize these hands on experiences and link them to the core competencies in a final culminating experience.

This interfaculty MS Program is conducted in collaboration with the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences (FAFS), the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS), the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (FEA), and the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS).
The Interfaculty Graduate Environmental Sciences Program (IGESP) leads to the degree of Master of Science (MS) in Environmental Sciences with four possible specializations or majors of which the major of Environmental Health is offered by the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS).
Curriculum
The IGESP consists of three closely integrated components structured to provide students with a diversified and multi-disciplinary background in Environmental Health. Core courses are required for all students. Elective courses provide students with opportunities to develop more specialized training in subjects related to environmental studies, and a thesis which often takes the form of applied research. Students enrolling in the Master of Science in Environmental Sciences program may choose either a thesis track or a non-thesis track. Students who choose the non-thesis track should present a project report before graduation. |
