International Health and
Medicine (IHM) is incorporated within the standard
four-year medical curriculum. Students take a full-year
course in Clinical and Global
Medicine during Year I, which provides a historical and
conceptual overview of current
practices and emerging issues in the field. Each week,
a Clinical and Global Medicine Day
exposes students to a variety of clinical settings throughout
the Negev region and specific
health issues affecting populations in the developing
world.
First and second year students at the
MSIH take a series of IHM modules on global health topics
such as disaster relief, poverty and health, bio-terrorism,
and nutrition in the third-world. Second year students
take a required course in clinical communications skills,
preparing them for the patient interviews and conducting
physical examination in multi-cultural settings.
In Year III, students also complete clerkship
rotations at Soroka University Medical Center. At
Soroka, they are exposed Beer Sheva’s diverse patient
population including Israel’s Bedouin and Ethiopian
communities and recent immigrants.
As a capstone of the MSIH experience, Year IV
students participate in the International Health
and Medicine Clerkship, a uniquely tailored two-month
clerkship that exposes MSIH students to lesser-developed
regions of the world. Under the supervision of an academic
coordinator, students spend two months with local students
at a university teaching hospital and/or a community health
center and complete supervised research projects addressing
health-related issues of local populations. |
