Founded in 1983, the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) currently has more than 2,750 individual members in 93 countries. The Society is a non-profit organisation registered in Taufkirchen, Germany with offices in Munich, Germany and the administrative headquarters in Basel, Switzerland. ESCMID welcomes all those who are interested in clinical microbiology and infectious diseases.
The mission of ESCMID is to improve the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of infectious diseases by promoting and supporting research, education and training in the infection disciplines. This is achieved by scientific exchange, educational programmes, grants and awards, certification and consultation with professional and government agencies. Through its activities and publications ESCMID fosters professional exchange and stimulates an open and collaborative spirit nourished by the diversity of European culture.

In 2010 ESCMID will celebrate once again the International Day for Fighting Infection by organizing a one-day symposium on milestones in the history of infections. This 3rd edition will be held once again on St. George's Day and will trace the evolution over the centuries of infection control in hospitals and of ad-hoc hospitals for infectious patients.

This event is organized in cooperation with the International Society of Chemotherapy (ISC) and the International Society of Infectious Diseases (ISID), and supported by The Lancet Infectious Diseases.

The course is focused on medical biofilms with examples from urinary tract infections to cystic fibrosis lung infections. The techniques include setup and running of biofilm flow cell systems, fluorescence in situ hybridization, various advanced imaging techniques, image analysis, flow cytometry and demonstration of biofilm techniques in experimental animal research. There will be a morning and a late afternoon lecture, the rest of the day will be laboratory demonstrations and work.
