Biologists and biomedical
scientists are becoming increasingly aware that animals
and plants have coevolved with diverse assemblages of
microorganisms that are required for normal health and
development. Not surprisingly, the activity of these symbiont
communities is also likely to profoundly affect all aspects
of the host’s physiology and immunology. In addition,
a more sophisticated grasp of these normal host-microbe
associations is essential if we are to understand what
goes wrong when pathogenic ‘interlopers’ disrupt
the dynamic stability of the symbiont communities of hosts,
including humans. Progress in these areas of investigation
requires the application not only of the traditional approaches
of biochemistry and genetics, but also of new conceptual
models arising from bioinformatics and systems biology.
The goal of this conference is to bring together a wide
array of scientific expertise to foster the development
of this rapidly expanding field of biology.
Session Topics:
- The role of beneficial microbes in host development
and physiology
- Genetics of beneficial host-microbe associations
- Ecology and evolution of microbial communities
- The role of microbiota in normal immune function
- Metabolomics and metabolic modeling of host-microbe
associations
- Beneficial microbes at the interface of health and disease

The purpose of this meeting
is to bring together individuals who are carrying out
research to defend against the growing threat of bioterrorism
and decision makers shaping the future biodefense research
agenda, recognizing that emerging infectious diseases
serve as a paradigm for handling the public threat of
bioterrorism.
This meeting is intended for scientists, public health
researchers and policy makers who need to be informed
about the latest scientific developments. The meeting
will include a series of keynote addresses by leaders
in the field of biodefense and poster sessions presenting
up-to-the-minute cutting-edge research on biothreat agents,
vaccines, detection and diagnostic procedures, animal
and plant pathogens, global surveillance, and other vital
topics.
Learning Objectives: The ASM Biodefense
and Emerging Diseases Research Meeting offers an educational
forum which allows the attendee to:
* Discuss new data from the research of microbiological
sciences related to biodefense and bioterrorism;
* Discuss with fellow scientists, researchers, and physicians,
the latest information on preventative modalities, therapeutics,
and clinical diagnoses related to biothreat agents; and
* Describe the most recent trends in the management and
planning of biodefense programs.

We look forward to welcoming
you to San Diego, California for the 110th General Meeting
of the American Society for Microbiology, the largest
annual gathering of microbiologists
in the world. The Program Committee has worked hard to
ensure that the 2010 General
Meeting will continue to serve the unique role of providing
a forum for cross-cutting science that spans the field
of microbiology. This year, the meeting will offer sessions
such as “Nanotechnology and Infectious Diseases”
and “Microbes in Extinction Events”, bringing
together diverse aspects of microbiology that are relevant
to today’s evolving world.
We are pleased to offer hundreds of additional didactic,
interactive, award and poster sessions on recent developments,
advances and controversies in all areas of microbiology
including clinical microbiology and epidemiology, pathogenesis
and host defense, general and applied microbiology, microbial
physiology, genetics and molecular microbiology, environmental
microbiology and evolution, parasitology, and virology.
We are certain these sessions will provide you with new
information that is relevant and useful. |
