The relationship between
human health and the environment is dynamic and rapidly
evolving. Some of the most profound changes are occurring
in the poorest countries of the world where nearly all
of the world's population growth is being observed. Many
of the major determinants of health in poor nations, both
now and in the future, relate to environmental issues.
Increasingly, the field of Environmental Health is international
in scope, and the field of International Health is concerned
with environmental issues. Recognizing the inherent connection
between the fields, the two departments came together
in 2001 to create an exciting and unique Masters in Public
Health program - Global Environmental Health (GEH).
Graduates of the joint MPH program in Global Environmental
Health will be trained in broad contextual issues that
frame health problems, and in the technical and policy
aspects of the health problems themselves, including:
- Population, demographics, environmental, and health
interactions
- Principles of ecology and environmental processes
- Natural resource use and health
- Agricultural, industrial, and economic development
- Globalization and global commerce
- International environmental and health policy issues
- Household and community dynamics and their impact
on environmental and human health from a social science,
historical, and economic perspectiv
Specific areas of learning incorporated into the GEH
Program include:
- Water and sanitation
- Indoor and outdoor air pollution
- Natural and human disasters
- Climate change and biodiversity
- Resource extraction and land use change
- Chemical, pesticide, and waste hazards
- Injury risk
- Occupational Health

of vulnerability to natural disasters. (Click

Public Nutrition addresses
population-based dietary and nutritional problems by elucidating
their extent, determinants, and consequences, and the
policies and programs to address them. Nutritional problems
exist at national, community, and individual levels and
include hunger, childhood malnutrition, famine, suboptimal
growth, infection, dietary imbalance or deficiency, and
chronic disease.
Public Nutrition requires a global perspective, spanning
the concerns of wealthy and poor nations. A solid understanding
of the biology of nutrition and the socioeconomic and
demographic influences on nutrition in conjunction with
the principles of design, implementation, and evaluation
of interventions is necessary to transform knowledge into
the action of public policy and nutrition programs. Students
from developed or developing countries can use these skills
to serve government ministries, private voluntary organizations,
technical agencies, applied research institutions, and
universities. |
