Thèmes: planification, organisation et gestion de services et systèmes de santé dans le cadre d'un développement global.
• Renforcer les capacités des professionnels de santé à traiter les questions de management, d’organisation et de planification des systèmes de soins de santé.
• Renforcer les capacités des professionnels de santé à analyser et évaluer des problèmes de santé spécifiques et à formuler des stratégies de contrôle appropriées.
• Stimuler le développement de capacités, compétences et connaissances pratiques nécessaires aux professionnels de santé pour leur rôle de généraliste en santé publique.
• Souligner l’apport essentiel d’autres disciplines pertinentes en santé publique et faciliter le dialogue trans-disciplinaire.
• Améliorer les compétences des professionnels de santé en communication et en transfert de connaissance, et développer leurs capacités d’auto-apprentissage.
To enable health professionals to deal with problems of management, organisation and planning of health care delivery systems.

Module 1: Introduction to International Health (13 weeks – 20 credits).
The first three weeks the students are taken through the basic concepts and methods in
public health, epidemiology and statistics, socio-anthropology and international health
policy.
After these introductory weeks the first three thematic blocks take health problems as an
entry point for discussion of important international health issues.
Block 1: Integrated TB care
Block 2: Vector-borne diseases: a comprehensive approach to prevention
and case management
Block 3: HIV/AIDS: from patient to policy
The subsequent four blocks address the provision of health care for specific social groups
and a population in general
Block 4: Safe Motherhood: a complex problem requiring a systemic approach
Block 5: Targeting health of the next generation
Block 6: Health care organisation in emergency situations
Block 7: Health care delivery systems for defined populations
Module 2: Clinical and biomedical sciences of tropical diseases.
Common subjects are:
• descriptive tropical medicine including parasitology, entomology, vector control
• basic laboratory
• hospital hygiene
Subjects in the medical track
• analytical pathology
• dermatology
• analytical paediatrics
• gynaecology/obstetrics in resource-poor settings
Subjects in the biomedical track

Applicants for the full course or candidates applying for Module 2 only, need a degree in Medicine or a university (master) degree (min 240 ECTS credits) in biomedical or pharmaceutical sciences.
For Module 1 other health professionals, such as health economists and health sociologists,
are welcome to apply on condition that they are holder of a university degree and have
relevant professional experience in international health in low-or middle income countries. |

Sciences cliniques et biomédicales de maladies tropicales (8 semaines, 10 crédit ECTS). La majorité des thèmes de ce module est commune, mais il y a certains sujets spécifiques pour les médecins d’une part, et les diplômés en sciences biomédicales ou pharmaceutiques d’autre part. Thèmes communs: - pathologie descriptive de maladies tropicales ; - pratiques de laboratoire de base. Thèmes spécifiques pour les médecins : - prises de décisions cliniques. Thèmes pour les licencié(e)s en sciences biomédicales ou pharmaceutiques : - pratiques de laboratoire avancées ; - parasitologie avancée.
Objectifs pédagogiques du module 2 : A la fin de ce module les médecins et les scientifiques biomédicaux et pharmaceutiques doivent être capables de : - maîtriser les caractéristiques biomédicales, cliniques et epidémiologiques des maladies tropicales ; - exécuter des tests de laboratoire et interpréter leurs résultats. Objectifs pédagogiques spécifiques pour les médecins: - analyser un tableau clinique dans un contexte epidémiologique donné, interpréter les résultats de laboratoire et les examens complémentaires et interpréter les signes et symptômes cliniques pour parvenir aux diagnostics différentiels les plus appropriés. Objectifs pédagogiques spécifiques pour les licencié(e)s en sciences biomédicales ou pharmaceutiques : - exécuter les tests de laboratoire complémentaires/spécialisés et interpréter leurs résultats ; - analyser les techniques de laboratoire et évaluer la qualité technique d’un laboratoire périphérique (centre de santé & hôpital de district) et suggérer des stratégies appropriées pour améliorer la qualité ainsi que les mécanismes pour assurer la pérennisation de cette qualité ; - évaluer les besoins en termes de coût, d’infrastructure, de consommables et de personnel pour les tests biologiques courants. |

Students receive up-to-date training in specific reproductive health problems, as well as the necessary elements for the formulation of integrated strategies. The focus is on the appraisal of the public health importance of reproductive health and the development of specific control methods, with an emphasis on integrated strategies and intersectoral collaboration.
The main themes covered include: • HIV/AIDS • Sexually Transmitted Infections; • Family planning and unsafe abortion; • Maternal Health; • Project Cycle Management & Logical Framework. After completion of the course, participants will have learned how to: • Assess the importance of the different components of reproductive health problems; • Develop and prioritise specific strategies for prevention and control; • Implement those strategies within existing health structures with the focus on accessibility, affordability and sustainability; • Monitor and evaluate reproductive health programmes. |

The course is intended for health professionals and scientists involved in, or responsible for, reproductive health programmes, including HIV/STI, family planning or safe motherhood. and draws on the unique expertise of the Institute and its collaborating centres. It combines in-depth knowledge of specific diseases with extensive experience in the organisation and evaluation of health services. |
| Requirements |
|
Holders of a university degree in health sciences or a professional bachelor in nursing sciences or midwifery can apply by duly completing the appropriate application form (available from MDC-MCM@itg.be or the ITM website www.itg.be), and send it to the course secretariat before 1 November. A selection committee will evaluate all applications on a comparative basis and notify candidates as soon as possible of the outcome. Candidates should be proficient in epidemiology, statistics and public health. A Master of Public Health degree (MPH) or a similar training is an asset. The course language is either French or English, the two languages alternating yearly. |

This Master in Public Health, orientation Disease Control, is intended for health care professionals working in ministries of health, international agencies or non-governmental organisations in low and middle-income countries. |
| Requirements |
|
A university degree, two years or more of relevant experience, and proficiency in the course language are required to be eligible for admission. The course language is French or English, alternating yearly (see overview). A good knowledge of the course language certified by an accredited test or equivalent is essential. Participants of the French course should preferably have a working knowledge of English. |
| Methods |
|
Teaching methods include lectures, individual and group work, problem-based learning and discussion sessions. There will be a strong emphasis on case studies and practical exercises involving participants in the design of control programmes appropriate to their country of origin. Small group sessions are a substantial part of the course. Senior staff from the Institute’s departments (Public Health, Microbiology, Parasitology, Clinical Sciences) teaches most of the modules. Distinguished external lecturers complement specific areas of expertise. |
