Our Biomedical Engineering
programme covers the application of mechanical and electronic
engineering principles to problems in medicine, including
the development of medical instrumentation and aids for
the disabled.
The course covers rehabilitation engineering, medical
electronics and biomechanics. The role of engineering
in rehabilitation requires that those working in the healthcare
professions become familiar with the principles of prosthetics,
orthotics, wheelchairs and other devices for the disabled.
Electronics involves looking at the instrumentation required
for medical purposes, and how that equipment is managed.
Biomechanics is the application of engineering principles
to the body, and in particular to the musculoskeletal
system. |

There is a growing demand
for more knowledge about, and a better understanding of,
human health and well-being. It is now widely accepted
that there are a range of factors which determine whether
individuals remain healthy, develop illnesses or experience
early death. These determinants include individual biology
and behaviour, economic, environmental, educational and
socio-cultural factors as well as the access individuals
have to health services. In addition, new approaches to
health care have developed, with an emphasis on multi-professional
team-work. Older forms of care are therefore giving way
to new, including the moving of care and responsibility
for improving population and individual health status,
outside hospitals and other institutions. It is against
this background that the degree and Honours degree in
Health Sciences has been instituted - its teaching shared
by departments in the Faculties of Medicine and Medical
Sciences, Science and Social Sciences and Law. It is mainly
concerned with examining the variety of views of what
constitutes health (physical, psychological and social),
and also providing a basis from which assessments may
be made of the relevance of formal and informal health
care to patterns of national ill-health. The degree includes
options for entrants with different health interests and
the opportunity to focus on science or arts subjects.
It therefore provides a base from which to proceed to
a career in a wide range of health-related occupations
or research. |

The Department of Public Health
offers a combined teaching and research curriculum. According
to their academic needs, individual students may register
for an MSc, Diploma or Certificate in Health Services and
Public Health Research. All three options require completion
of the taught curriculum between September and December.
Award of an MSc requires completion of a six-month research
dissertation. Students who complete a three month research
thesis will be eligible for a Diploma. Students who complete
the taught curriculum are eligible for a Certificate in
Health Services and Public Health Research. Those students
who finish only parts of the taught curriculum are provided
with a Certificate of Completion for individual courses. |

This course in applied epidemiology
has been running in Aberdeen since 2007, having previously
been run at the ARC Epidemiology Unit, University of Manchester,
for nearly 15 years. The course is still run in collaboration
with The University of Manchester and features faculty
with international reputation, from the Universities of
Aberdeen, Manchester, Keele and Southampton.
Although the course is particularly aimed at practitioners
and researchers in musculoskeletal disease, it covers
concepts and methods common to all chronic disease epidemiology.
At the end of the course, delegates will have a thorough
grounding in the principles of study design, the collection
and analysis of data in epidemiological studies, and various
methodological aspects of epidemiological study, including
bias, confounding, validity and reliability. |
